Electronic data interchange data

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) data refers to structured information exchanged electronically between organizations or systems in a standardized format. EDI facilitates the seamless and automated communication of business documents (for example, purchase orders, invoices, shipping notifications) without the need for manual intervention. It also helps with compliance by helping organizations adhere EDI data in industries adhere to specific privacy and security standards. This can include in healthcare (for example, HIPAA compliance for EDI 837 claims) and international trade (for example, customs declarations).  It is also widely used in industries like retail, logistics, and manufacturing.

EDI data is transmitted using agreed-upon standards (for example, ANSI X12, EDIFACT, TRADACOMS) and communication protocols (for example, AS2, FTP, HTTPS). The data typically includes information about transactions, parties involved, and relevant details specific to the type of business document.

Electronic data interchange data typically includes:

  • Purchase Orders (EDI 850): A document sent from a buyer to a supplier to request goods or services
  • Invoices (EDI 810): A document sent from a supplier to a buyer to request payment for goods or services provided
  • Advance Shipping Notices (ASN) (EDI 856): A document sent by the supplier to notify the buyer about a pending shipment
  • Shipping Status Updates (EDI 214): A document used by logistics providers to provide updates on the status of a shipment
  • Inventory Reports (EDI 846): A document sent by a supplier to provide information about inventory levels
  • Payment Remittance Advice (EDI 820): A document sent by a buyer to confirm payment details for an invoice
  • Healthcare Claim Transactions (EDI 837): A document used in the healthcare industry to submit insurance claims
  • Functional Acknowledgments (EDI 997): A document used to confirm the receipt of EDI messages
  • Product Catalogs (EDI 832): A document used to share product information between trading partners
  • Transportation Load Tender (EDI 204): A document sent by a shipper to offer a shipment to a carrier
  • Customs Declarations (EDI 309): A document used for reporting imports and exports to customs authorities
