Classic dashboard export deprecation FAQ

Splunk announced deprecation for Classic dashboard export capabilities in Splunk Cloud Platform 9.3.2408. This article contains commonly asked FAQs around the deprecation.

  1. Why is Splunk deprecating Classic dashboard export capabilities?
Classic dashboard exports had many limitations, such as the inability to maintain the dashboard layout and styling, and requiring users to remove inputs and tokens. As of Splunk Cloud Platform 9.1.2312 and Splunk Enterprise 9.3, Dashboard Studio now supports on-demand, API, and scheduled exports of dashboards.

Given that Dashboard Studio provides a superior export experience (maintaining the layout and styling, and allowing inputs and tokens to remain in the dashboard), we are reallocating engineering resources from supporting Classic dashboard exports to new feature development.
  2. What exactly is being deprecated?
Splunk is deprecating all Classic dashboard export features, which includes "Export PDF", "Schedule PDF Delivery", "Print", and export via API.

  3. When will Classic dashboard export capabilities be removed?
Splunk is planning on a phased approach over multiple releases that will provide customers ample time to convert their scheduled Classic dashboards to scheduled Studio dashboards.

  4. Can I still use my Classic dashboards after deprecation and removal?
Yes, you can continue to use Classic dashboards after deprecation and after removal. However, after removal, you will no longer be able to export those dashboards.

  5. Can I still export Classic dashboards after deprecation?
Yes, you can continue to export Classic dashboards after deprecation. However, after removal, you will no longer be able to export those dashboards and scheduled exports will be canceled.

  6. How do I identify which Classic dashboards have schedules?
Starting in Splunk Cloud Platform 9.1.2402 and Splunk Enterprise 9.3, there is a new dashboard called "Scheduled export is now available for Dashboard Studio" in the Search & Reporting app that provides a list of Classic dashboards with schedules.

You can also navigate to Settings > Searches, reports, and alerts, then search for views starting with "_ScheduledView". This will return a list of both Classic and Studio scheduled dashboards.

  7. What alternatives do I have for exporting dashboards?
You are encouraged to convert your scheduled Classic dashboards to scheduled Studio dashboards. If you wish to also continue using your Classic dashboards you can, but you will need to use Dashboard Studio for scheduling or exporting dashboards.

You can reference this blog post for tips on converting scheduled Classic dashboards.

  8. Are Classic dashboards also being deprecated?
Classic dashboards are not being deprecated, only the ability to export Classic dashboards.
